More details are coming out about the motive behind the killing of rapper Nipsey Hussle. Despite misreporting, which appears to be an ongoing theme with media when Black people are killed — famous or not — the Los Angeles shooting on Sunday does not appear to be gang related.

Reportedly, the 33-year-old rapper, whose real name was Ermias Asghedom, knew the suspect. Eric Holder, 29, currently has a warrant out for his arrest. CNN.com claims it was a personal dispute and while Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore “declined to elaborate on the feud between the two, saying he didn’t want to jeopardize any potential prosecution, but he said the suspect approached Nipsey and others multiple times, engaging them in conversation.”

Holder allegedly fired at Hussle, killing him and injuring two others. Moore also claimed the dispute does not appear gang-related. The suspect allegedly goes by the name “Shitty Cuz”  or “Fly Mac.” See below:

While Hussle was associated with gangs, he appeared to be distancing himself from that life. Shortly before his death, he was talking with Steve Soboroff, president of the Los Angeles Police Commission, about how to avoid youth from getting involved in gangs.

Soboroff told ABC News, “We’re talking about programs to help underserved kids, to keep kids out of gangs. And this was his idea. We’ve been working on this meeting for three months. How I wish it would have been on Saturday.”

TMZ also reported on Thursday that Nipsey Hussle was filming a music video for the track “Higher,” which is a song with DJ Khaled and John Legend. The site claimed the rapper was in fear for his life during the video shoot.

“There was great concern over Nipsey’s safety during the shoot … specifically over the parking structure the crew used to film,” TMZ reported. “Our sources say the production team wanted the entire structure shut down so that only folks working the shoot would have access.” Ten armed police officers were reportedly hired.

Based on a tweet by Los Angeles Police Chief Michael Moore, Nipsey Hussle was one of 26 people killed in across the city in the last week.

Rest in power, Nipsey Hussle.
