According to TMZ, it will be a will be extremely intimate and closed off to the public. The service will take place at 10 a.m. at Angelus Funeral Home in South L.A. TMZ reports, “It’s the same place where Nipsey’s family came for the viewing and private service.”

He will be buried at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills, which is also where Nipsey Hussle was buried.

Singleton’s office was reportedly only a few blocks away from Nipsey Hussle’s store The Marathon Clothing, which is where he was shot and killed on March 31.

There will reportedly be a public service on May 21 but it is still being planned.

TMZ also reports that his mother Sheila Ward, who also handled all of John’s business affairs, filed his will with the court. The will was written in 1993, when he only had one daughter. Therefore, his 26-year-old daughter, Justice Singleton, will get his estate, which is reportedly valued at $3.8 million.

TMZ also says, “Under California law, the 6 children born after the will was signed may have rights, because they were not specifically excluded from the will. If the 6 kids didn’t get anything from John, under California law, they could make a strong case the $3.8 million should be divided into 7 equal parts … in other words, each child would get 1/7th.”

His full estate is reportedly valued at $35 million so the $3.8 million may not be all of his assets.

Singleton is known for films like 1991’s “Boyz n the Hood,” which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He was the youngest filmmaker to be nominated in those categories. He was also the first African-American to be nominated for Best Director.

Singleton was reportedly experiencing weakness in his leg after flying back from Costa Rica before he suffered his stroke. The long flight may have triggered the medical emergency.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains. It’s often described as a brain attack. Brain cells die when they are starved of oxygen.

Approximately 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year, making it the fifth leading cause of death for Americans. For African-Americans, however, the risk of having a first stroke is nearly twice as high compared to whites. Blacks also suffer the highest rate of death due to stroke. A stroke also occurs earlier in life for African-Americans compared to other racial and ethnic groups, according to the National Stroke Association.

Rest in power, John Singleton.
